Cafés in Athens

Athenians, like most Greeks, love their coffee, especially their frappé, an iced shaken and stirred beverage that is consumed year-round. For Athenians, like their European counterparts, drinking a cup of coffee is a ritual that is often accompanied by a parea (a group of friends), good conversation and people- watching or reading the newspaper.
In the winter, Athenians choose to drink their coffee outdoors under a heated lamp that is a standard addition to any café in Athens. Popular coffee hangouts for the young and old are usually found in central squares or plateies. Check out the plateies at Kolonaki, Gazi, Glyfada, Exarchia, Fokionos Negri, Monastiraki, Plaka and order a frappé to your liking.
